Horsepower hour
When locomotives began to be leased on a performance-use basis rather than on time alone, a new measurement was devised, the horsepower hour, recorded by on-board microprocessors.

horsepower (hp) is the name of several non-metric units of power. In scientific discourse the term "horsepower" is rarely used because of the various

Horsepower Hour
A unit of work equal to the work done by one horsepower in one hour. When locomotives began to be leased on an amount used basis rather than on the length of time alone, this new measurement was devised to keep track of usage.

Horsepower (HP)
Measure of power. One HP = The force that will raise 33,000 pounds by 1 foot in 1 minute.

Horsepower
The measuring unit of power; technically, the power necessary to continuously raise 550 pounds one foot in one second.

Horsepower per Trailing Ton. The total horsepower of all working locomotives divided by the total trailing weight of the train in tons. Horsing Lever The lever on a steam locomotive used to manually adjust the valve setting (ie. cutoff).

Drawbar Horsepower The total horsepower of a locomotive less the amount of horsepower that it takes to move the locomotive itself, the balance being available to pull the load.

EMD built a 4000 horsepower version of the 20 cylinder prime mover found in the SD45 back in the very late 60's or early 70's.

SC - Six hundred horsepower, Cast frame
SW - Six hundred horsepower, Welded frame
NC - Nine hundred horsepower, Cast frame ...

LRVs also have higher weights and horsepower than trolleys or streetcars. LVPS (Low Voltage Power System) See Control Voltage.

Derating - Modifications made to a locomotive which allows only a portion of the avalible horsepower to be used. This usually will result in cost savings in fuel and maintenance.

The train was propelled by a 660-horsepower, 8-cylinder, 2-cycle Winton 201A Diesel engine designed by General Motors, and built by the Electro Motive Corporation.

Slugs are generally used in yard duty where the switcher has enough horsepower, but not enough tractive force to push long strings of cars up a hump."

RAILWAYS.

Start the motor and determine the rated power of the motor (measured in horsepower, or hp) and the speed of the motor (in revolutions per minute, or rpm).

Streamlined diesels came in two types: a unit with a can, called an "A unit," and of course a B unit without a cab. To increase horsepower, a railroad had only to add another A or B unit to a train.

The number of traction motors depends on the locomotives configuration and horsepower. Most have direct drive axles and some have gear driven axles.
Traction supply: The supply for the driving traction motors of electric trains.
