Hydrocal
A US Gypsum product used in model railroading for the base of hard shell scenery.

What is hydrocal?
This a plaster product commonly used for creating terrain. The easiest sources seem to be model railroad stores, since I've yet to find a building supply store that has any idea what I want.

- Allow the Hydrocal to dry out overnight. You can try to take the mold out earlier after only about an hour if you want the mold to be malleable enough to bend a little for better incorporation into your scene.

What is Hydrocal? A trademark product of U. S. Gypsum (USG Corp.), Hydrocal plaster's biggest advantage is its strength.

At Ardsley Heights and Glenwood Lake, scenery was built using Hydrocal-coated paper towels over a framework of foamcore strips and masking tape. Rock molds were used on the hills, and then painted with thinned out acrylic artists paints.

I used drywall compound (as opposed to plaster or hydrocal) as I found it mixed well and had one trait I really liked. When I added the stones etc, it took hours to fully dry. This made it possible to sculpt it the way I wanted to.

The rocky areas are hydrocal with a plaster on a chicken wire base. The mountain areas at the west end of the building are constructed from garden bark chips that have been glued together and painted.

You can even make your own rock molds using latex rubber and your favorite rock(s) but that is beyond the scope of this clinic. Since I am a modular guy, I use lightweight Hydrocal.
