Interurban
An electric railroad running between cities, often of lighter construction than "steam" railroads and often operating in the streets of cities and towns instead of on a private right of way.

Interurban

RAILWAYS. As used in the USA, "interurban" refers to a trolley (streetcar, light railway) system which ran between two different towns or cities.

The Chicago Aurora & Elgin (nicknamed the “Roarin’ Elgin') was an electric interurban line that ran west out of the city of Chicago to the suburbs and to the cities on the Fox River.

In the USA, "electric interurban" railroad networks connected most urban areas in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

If you want to learn more about Doodlebugs, I suggest that you buy or borrow the book "Interurban without Wires" by Ed Keilty. It was first published in 1979 and tells about Doodlebugs of all sizes and types.

If you were to run street car traction lines, you could really pack some sharp curves into a small area, but with street cars and Interurbans, the couplers are different allowing for much greater swing.

Not to be confused with the interurban definition of subway, which is normally a light-rail passenger service running mostly underground.
