American term for outer covering of thin sheet steel over the lagging material of a locomotive boiler, cylinder or other insulated heat radiating surface.

The jackets worn in Fall and Spring are usually simple colors. Bright colors are rare. Jackets are normally subdued darks and lights, but not brights. The same goes for shirts and blouses.
Anorak
Ugly nylon jacket, usually insulated and windproof. Part of the obligatory uniform of the trainspotter.
