Kadee began production of their automatic knuckle couplers in 1968. Their Micro-Trains freight cars followed in 1972.
In the late 1970s, Model Die Casting (Roundhouse) introduced their line of freight cars.
Put a Kadee height checker on the rails and push the frame toward it (this is where two height checkers come in handy - one on each side of the car).
Couplers--Most popular today are the Kadee and knuckle. Kadees are preferred by scale and some hirail operators because they appear more prototypical. Kadee makes an S scale #802 and an HO #5 (both suitable for S scale).
If you intend to use Kadee or other magnetic knuckle couplers, it's handy to take a tip from prototype railroads and build a "hump" yard. That is, put the uncoupler on a gentle slope so that uncoupled cars roll gently away from the mainline.

Modelers replace their horn-hook (HO) or Rapido-style (N) couplers for two reasons: realistic appearance and operation. Magnetic knuckle couplers are made by Accurail, Bachmann, InterMountain, Kadee, McHenry, and Micro-Trains.
