It isn't long after one gets their first train set that they begin to wonder if there is more to it than just watching their trains run in circle.

The first thing that has to be decided is the size of the model railway layout that will be built. This, of course, depends on the size of the baseboard, the availability of the materials, time allotted and the experience of the builder.

Layout: the term used to refer to how an individual sets up his or her model railroad. Layouts can fit in a briefcase, fill entire buildings, or circle your property (garden railways). Modelrailweb.

layout — the sum of the track, scenery, buildings, locomotives and cars of a model railroad.
left hand turnout (or switch) — a turnout which directs a train to the left of the straight line of travel.

The layout
Construction of the layout began in December 1994, and was largely complete by May 2000. The layout is a linear design with a footprint of 24x40 feet.

Layouts vary from the very stylistic (sometimes just a simple circle or oval of track) to the "absolutely realistic", where real places are modelled to scale.

Cab Control : A means of wiring a layout to enable track sections to be switched between two or more speed controllers.

I recently attended a GATS in Nashville where I saw a Z scale layout that featured quite realistic trees. Lucky for me the modeler of this layout gave a short seminar on making trees.
