N scale is a popular model railway size. Depending upon the manufacturer, the scale ranges from 1:148 to 1:160. In all cases, the gauge (the distance between the rails) is 9 mm.

 


N Scale Display Layouts

N Scale is not used for "under the Tree" display layouts as much as larger scales. Nonetheless, it has distinct advantages. An N scale layout can employ more original scenery, for instance.

N scale is 1:160 (1.9 mm/ft) with a track gauge of 9 mm. Lone Star Products (Great Britain) introduced a line of 8 mm gauge metal push trains in the 1950s. Arnold (Germany) first offered their electric trains in 1960.

Which is better, HO or N scale? Both. Each scale offers advantages that the other can't match, and for a particular modeler, this makes all the difference in the world.

What is the difference between scale and gauge?
Scale is the ratio between the model and the prototype; for example, N scale is 1/160th of the size of the real world. Gauge is the distance between the inside faces of the two rails.
