National Model Railroad Association. A national organization dedicated to the advancement of model railroading in all scales. The organization instrumental in the establishment of standards for model railroading.
The NMRA convention is held in Summer, and allows manufacturers to show their stuff plus a few additions made in Spring. What you see at the NMRA convention is what is being pushed for Autumn, the prime selling season.
What is the NMRA? The NMRA, or National Model Railroad Association, is an organization devoted to the development, promotion, and enjoyment of the hobby.
They generally track well, have decent weight-to-length ratios (per NMRA standards) and have operating diaphragms, good basic interior fittings and options for interior lighting readily available.
At a subsequent 1942 NMRA meeting the designation "S" was formally adopted for 3/16" scale model railroading. It is thought that the "S" was derived from words such as Seven-eighths in the track gauge or three-sixteenths in the scale.

I am a Life Member (#517) of NMRA, a member of the Rocky Mountain Garden Railroaders (Calgary, Alberta), and have toured a lot of model railways, railway shows, and garden railways. I have never seen a model railway I didn't like.
