NMRA gauges are sanctioned by the National Model Railroad Association. Their precise measurements will be useful in the adjusting of wheels assessment of gauge or width of track.

Use your NMRA gauge to be certain that the target will not be whacked by a passing train. You may need to move the cup to get the result you want. When you are happy, attach the stand to the long ties.
~ Make sure the couplers on your cars or engines are in proper position and sitting at the right height above the track. Once again, there are standards for this. One of the NMRA gauge devices appropriate for your scale can be used to check this.
