O Scale: (1:48) also called "classic trains" or "toy trains". The most famous brand of this scale is Lionel. The locomotives are big and impressive and are a favorite of young and old "kids" alike.
O scale model trains and S scale model trains are large when compared to the more popular HO scale model trains.
O scale is 1:48 size with 1 1/4" track gauge and a minimum radius of 2 foot (24 inches).
O scale: American O scale is 1/48 ; British O is 1/43. The difference is a matter of model gauge versus real track gauge. US modelers are willing to fudge a few inches in real time to make O a strict 1/48. In 1/48, 1/4 inch equals one scale foot.

O Scale/O Gauge
Model railroad scale in the proportion of 1:48 (nominally, 1/4 inch = 1 foot); includes O scale, O gauge, O27 gauge, and On3 and On2 scale model trains and equipment.
It is common practice in tinplate to refer to a scale, say O scale as O gauge. This is incorrect terminology but is the normal practice.
For example, an O scale train has a 1:48 proportion to the real thing, meaning that 1 inch on the surface of the model equals 48 inches on the surface of the prototype train.
It was designed for use on a "The London Model Railroad Group's" large O scale layout located at London, Ontario, Canada. The prime requirements for the club throttles were that they be rugged, reliable and produce as little heat as possible.
Some O Scale trains, like Lionel, MTH, and American Flyer, use alternating current (AC) to drive the motors. These trains use a three rail track with the two outer rails acting as a single wire and the center rail carrying the return circuit.
If you are in G Gauge, a Galloping Goose and a Railbus are available at prices reasonable for the scale - even cheap by O scale standards. For HO and N layouts of limited size the Spectrum Doodle Bug is a good runner and easy on the budget.
Manila Folders can be used to cost effectively make an attractive, functional model railroad bridge in N, HO, S, and O scales if built sufficiently strong and also with good structure.

Highly detailed models are offered by the other importers, with steam prices in the $450-1000+ range, diesels in the $200-400+ range. O scale models can run twice as much as these prices.
Most railroads in North America and Europe are built to a standard gauge of 4'-8½". Narrow gauge means track with a width less than standard gauge. For example, On3 means O scale trains with 3 scale feet between the rails.
