Pilots are required whenever the Engineer is not familiar with and/or not qualified on a particular segment of railroad. The qualifications include rules, signals, physical characteristics and the like.

COWCATCHER"Pilot. The old term was discarded by railroad officials, probably because it was a butt for jokesters.

Station pilot (UK): Shunting engine based at a major passenger station and used for passenger train shunting duties.
Steam generator: A device generally used in passenger trains to create steam for heating.

Manual Block operations are controlled by either a pilot flag on site, a controller via radio, or a switch tender. May also be controlled by a signalman receiving instructions to manually change the signals and switches.

This eliminates the wack of the wheels at stressed joints at the top and bottom as well as pilot (cowcatchers) catching the center rail at the bottom and longer locomotives rocking over the peak at the top.

Pilot - Structure at the front of a locomotive for sweeping tracks, often called a cowcatcher; also an additional locomotive coupled to the front of the train locomotive to provide assistance over a heavy graded section of line.

The first number indicates the number of "pilot" wheels that help lead the engine into turns. The second in the number of coupled wheels ("drivers"). Third are the trailing idler wheels, usually to provide support to larger fireboxes.

I've now attached the combination cylinder and pilot castings to the front of the mech. Now if you've been reading along you already know that I mentioned the telling of some stories about filing. Here goes.

If you decide to go that route buy a "pilot drill" for the screw size you are using.

The same technique was used for the back marker/running lights, and Micro-Trains 1015 couplers have been added to the pilots by simply re-inserting the black coupler post through the coupler box and into the sill.
