Poling
Moving cars on an adjoining track by using a long spar which is placed in a socket of the car end beam and a socket on the locomotive pilot beam.

In Venice the gondola is usually propelled by one or two oarsmen (known as gondoliers) who stand facing the prow, or by poling. A gondola for passengers has a small open cabin, for their protection against the sun or rain.
Spar - The wooden rod used in poling operations.
Spark Arrester - A device, usually in the form of a mesh or baffle plate fitted in the smoke box to prevent the emission of live coals and sparks from the chimney or smoke stack.
