Prototype Review: Walthers™ Budd Passenger Cars
Article by Christopher Baker ...

Here is the list for the prototype magazines. As many of you already know there is plenty of prototype information in the modeling magazines, and some of the magazines under the modeling category are mainly prototype with a little modeling thrown in.

Prototype Gauge:
Standard gauge
British TT is 3 mm scale; that is, 1:101. There is a Three Millimetre Society. It is a British based society which caters for railway modellers of 3 mm scale.

Prototype: the real thing, or 1:1 scale! The term can also refer to a specific railroad or set of practices. For example, "My favorite prototype is Conrail" or "Gee, pouring model coal into my hoppers from a measuring cup isn't very prototypical! ...

Prototype: the real thing. 1 to 1 scale (1:1). What we get excited about when we see it coming down the tracks in our home town.

Prototype - The actual subject upon which a model or replica is based.

Factory prototype/factory sample: Manufacturers produce these preproduction models for executives and employees so they can work out plans to design and decorate the final model.

Prototype
The real, full-sized object after which a scale model is made.
Pull the pin ...

Prototype The actual, real life, full-sized object that is modeled.
Rail joiner A part of folded metal used to connect a butt joint between two rails.
Reefer Refrigerator box car used to haul foods. No air conditioner or ice.

Prototype: the real world vehicle or gun on which an item is based. Some vehicles made by toymakers have no actual prototype.

2) The original unit from which the model has been patterned.

The prototype detectors had one and one half primary turns and could detect a track current of less than 1 milliamp . Tests can be carried out to find the number of primary turns needed for a particular application. Some points to consider are: ...

Think about prototype rail sizes. Narrow gauges ran on 40 pound rail. 140 pound rail is common on main lines today. 100 pounds per yard was normal during steam days.

The prototype uses a pin above the coupler head which, when lowered, locks into the rear of the knuckle inside the coupler head.

Scale The ratio between the size of the models and the size of the prototype. This can be expressed either as a ratio or as so many millimetres per foot (or fractions of an inch per foot for American models).

AAR - "Association of American Railroads", This trade group establishes safety and equipment standards.

Ballasting : The prototype track is laid on a bed of loose rock chippings, to provide drainage and support for the sleepers.

Stereolithography really works well with limited budget concerns as since the plastic mould cost of manufacturing is on the lower side and prototype making is a process of approvals and changes, ...

Modelers new to the hobby often ask about comparative rail size and how it is proportioned to the prototype rail used on American railroads. The first chart below illustrates how a particular size rail is approximately equivalent to an S scale track.

A significant number of prototype railroads often mount a rotary beacon on the cab roof of a locomotive to serve as a warning device. This beacon design is sometimes also known as the gumball type of flasher.

Early Minitrix all metal European prototype 0-6-0T steam locomotive. It was packaged as a "Little Donkey" in the U.S. and was manufactured from the 1960s until Minitrix declared bankruptcy in the late 1990s.

A fishplate is a metal device used to join rails. In the prototype, fishplates are bolted to each segment of rail. In the model world, rail joiners could be considered sort of fishplates. I forget what fishplates are called in North America.

My objective with my model railway is to create a realistic-looking large scale narrow gauge model railroad without strict adherence to a particular prototype or era, while allowing for a bit of whimsy and "time-sliding".

My module has a double mainline so it should reflect good drainage as would the prototype.

RT Automatic Open Crossing (remotely monitored) Now only one left on the Network Rail system (in Scotland.)RT Automatic Railway Inquiry Systems In Europe a prototype system to provide passenger timetable information.

Just be sure to do the installation and painting of backdrops under the lighting the railroad will be operated under and do it before building the railroad. You know, the prototype had it easy.
