Second class trains were generally higher priority manifest trains often referred to as red ball or time freights. Some local passenger trains (the ones that made each every local stop along the way) might be designated second class as well.
Red Ball - A fast freight train.
Reefer - A refrigerator car. Similar to a boxcar but has ice or mechanical cooling equipment.
Reefer Block - A freight train consist of refrigerator cars.
