Reefers: refrigerated cars haul perishables, and are something like a meat locker on trucks. The older cars had ice bunkers which were replenished at icing stations along the way. Today's reefers have mechanical refrigeration units.

Refrigerator cars (or, colloquially, reefers) - a refrigerated subtype of boxcar

RAILWAYS. I think this is probably a slang expression for a refrigerated freight wagon.

Steam era reefer express trains also had to periodically stop at icing platforms.
Second Class Manifest or Through freights, #51-98, provide fast service between major yards.

The caboose was painted with caboose red paint for the sides, and reefer yellow for the ends. The cupola window rails were painted light gray, as were the window edges on the front and back of the cupola. The smoke-jack was painted grimy black.
