The caboose is an RTR run of an old Athearn kit. The wheels are metal, insulated on a metal axle, with McHenry couplers.
Whilst flextrack is available for both EM and P4 gauges, ready-to-run (RTR) point and crossing (P&C) work is not available, so P&C trackwork must be constructed by the modeller.
Bachman: Sold as "ready-to-run" units, these engines usually cost about $100 [$25 - $55 (RTR)]. The bodies are plastic. The running characteristics of these engines vary a lot. If possible, see it run before buying.
RTR - Ready to run. A model train that needs no assembly. Rule G - The railroad rule against drinking. Run-around - This is a maneuver in which the same locomotive is used to pull the train in the opposite direction for the return trip.
You can buy two of these, ruin the first one, succeed with the second, and still have an engine for less than the going price of an ready to run (RTR) loco. And look at what you learn along the way. Besides, if I can do this, you can do it too.
