Z Scale: even smaller than N Scale (1:220). This scale is great for coffee tables, a nice addition to your executive desk - good for any "large" layout in a very small space. Easy to transport if you like.

Large Scale model railroading is also very popular. It is the fastest growing facet of our hobby, and in time and money spent, exceeds most of the better known smaller scales, with the exception of HO and possibly N scales.

N scale is 1:160 (1.9 mm/ft) with a track gauge of 9 mm. Lone Star Products (Great Britain) introduced a line of 8 mm gauge metal push trains in the 1950s. Arnold (Germany) first offered their electric trains in 1960.

HO Scale Ballast tip from: Paul Templar
For HO modelers who are ballasting track for the first time, why not try my method. Don't use granulated stuff, just use flock material, similar to woodland scenics ground cover.

"S" scalers are a growing minority who speak of the "ideal scale" with fire in their eyes. If we apply 1:64 to the two foot (60cm) gauge we find rails just 9.4 or 9.5 millimeters apart. "N" scale is 9.0mm.

Live rail/Dead rail A railroad track scale was usually unable to handle the weight of a locomotive, therefor it was necessary to provide a way for the locomotive to pass the scale without damaging it.
