Scratch building is the process of building a model from raw materials, rather than building it from a commercial kit, 'kit-bashing' or buying it pre-assembled.

Plastic model kits of building often have brick walls molded into surface and for scratch building there is embossed plastikard available.

Model builder has combined the best of the old scratch building days with new technology to make it much easier to achieve that custom built building look without having to spend countless hours gluing individual pieces together.

This was a time when modelers did a lot of designing and scratch building to create their locomotives. Wartime restrictions had practically eliminated the availability of any kits that were produced.

Freight Yard - A group of tracks used for storage of freight cars.

Building Papers : Paper that has been printed to make it look like brickwork, roofing tiles etc. Very useful for scratch building or creating scenic details such as arches etc.
