Sectional track

Model railroad Section HandSelective Compression

Sectional track:
Not only are the materials for making track not equal, but track comes in different lengths and shapes as well. New modelers generally use the 9 inch long pieces of sectional track that come in sets.

Sectional track
Track in short, rigid pieces (fixed length and curve radii) that are easily joined to each other.

Sectional Track
In model railroading, pieces of track in any scale or gauge manufactured to specific geometric proportions, which can then be joined together in straight lines, curves, and circles.

I like to use sectional track (without the attached roadbed) in places where straight track is required, and when curves with the standard radii are needed.

Instead of using sectional track, many advanced modelers prefer to design with flex-track in mind. Since flex track can be ordered in bundles for less money, it's also an economical choice.

Gargraves makes O sectional track in 32", 42", 54", 63", 72", 80", 89", 96", 106", 113", 120", 128" and 138" diameter curves
Ross makes 31", 42", 54", 64", 72", 80", 88", 96", 104", 112", 120", and 128" diameter curves.

Some of the classes are intended for younger kids, ages 6 to 10, and teach things such as assembling sectional track, using a crane to unload a gondola car, and some very simple switching and train operation.

We started with flex track or perhaps sectional track. With weathering and careful ballasting, the flex track yields a right-of-way with a very satisfactory look.

Rail joiner: the device that holds rail ends together and in alignment. Commercial, sectional track comes with slide-on joiners. Clamp-on joiners are also available.

Radius-Minimum--This depends upon the track you are using. The radius of American Flyer curved track is about 19".
American Models code .148 sectional track uses a radius of 27".
Most scale modelers prefer a minimum radii upward of 36".
