Shuffle - To switch cars.
Shunt - To switch to another path.
Shuttle - Train which gives a frequent return service over a short route.
We arrived downtown and set up on the Main Street overpass to watch the train shuffle cars at the west end of the yard.
Robbie variants walked (actually, shuffled) on two feet or skimmed on tracks. The Robot on Lost in Space was of the Robbie type. As characters went, Robbie could be the most benevolent and bumbling of allies or the archetype of cunning villains.
Stopping everywhere to shuffle milk cans tossed all possibility of a fast schedule right out the window. However, the milk trains sure beat walking from Podunk to Cow Hollow.
Peak demand, particularly for grain shipment, occurs in different parts of North America at different times, so freight cars are shuffled back and forth across the continent to wherever they are needed.
