Slug
A unit of motive power with traction motors but without a diesel engine. Electricity for the motors is provided by a standard locomotive with which the slug is mated. Usually used in hump, transfer, or other low-speed service.

 


Slug

Beyer-Garratt
An articulated steam locomotive with a central boiler/cab assembly pivoted between two power units.

Commonly referred to as a B unit or a Slug. Although not all Slugs are cabless.
Caboose: A railroad car attached usually to the end of a train, in which railroad workers could ride and monitor track and rolling stock conditions.

Slug - A locomotive which receives its electrical current to run the traction motors from another locomotive. They are not equipped with their own diesel and therefore must be operated with another locomotive.

Mother and Slug The name used for a locomotive and slug when MU'd for yard or road operation. MOW Maintenance Of Way Multiple Main Tracks Two or more main tracks, the use of which is designated in the timetable. MU Multiple Unit.

On the day in particular, I noticed the locomotive I was taking charge of, an SW1500 with a slug had not been fueled in over three days. I reported this to the East Yardmaster who then checked to see if what I was reporting was correct.

Their are fewer heavy footmen and fewer formations, so the auxiliary troops play a larger role in the fighting. Basically, it is as few slow-moving heavy units closing in, while the larger light units slug it out around them.

Slug A small, ballasted, four or six axle unit, semipermanently coupled to a locomotive that does not have a prime mover, but does have traction motors.
