A turnout held in one position by a spring so that facing point traffic always takes the same route but trailing point traffic can run through the turnout from either track.

Spring switch
Standard track switch equipped with a spring mechanism that automatically returns the switch points to a normal position after they have been displaced by the passage of cars in a trailing point movement.

In the case of the Gilman Sub, the siding at Thawville has spring switches at either end. A train pulling out of the siding does not have to operate the hand throw switches there when leaving; they can just proceed on through.

Alternatively the railroad may decide to have the spring switches lined for separate tracks instead, thereby effectively creating a short section of double track: ...

However, to stay closer to hobby standards, I will call this critter, which is not quite a turnout, a TURNIP. The turnip functions like a spring switch -oops- I mean a spring turnout, but there are no moving parts.
