Station and Street Figures
An essential for good scenes are the nondescript figures who hold their place. They are not conspicuous, as their goal is to fill the streets and stations with passers-by and waiting passengers.

 


Stations built more recently often have a similar feel to airports, with a cold and plain abstract style.

Automatic Station Stop Circuit
with Two Stage Braking
The "Automatic Station Stop Circuit" brings a train to a station stop in two braking steps and then sends the train on it's way after a set period of time.

Station Buildings A structure located on or near a station platform and which incorporates services such as a ticket office, waiting room, stores and often the station-masters living quarters.

A station for passengers and freight; term usually applied to a rather small facility in a town or village.
Derail
A device placed over the rail to prevent a car from rolling out of a siding (for example) and onto the main line.

A station at which trains only stop when signaled.
Flagman
Usually, the brakeman assigned to duties at the rear end of the train.

If station names are based on real towns in appropriate sequence, they not only add to the realism, but also place the railroad geographically.

At stations like Onarga, we have the advantage of double track railroad. We spot the train on track one and main line traffic can pass us on track two provided they have our permission.

Substation. A location where power is received at high voltage and changed to required voltages and characteristics for distribution to the catenary system, third rail, and other electric apparatus.

Power station
Booster is the electronic device that combines and amplifies the DCC commands generated by the command station with power from the power supply.

Union station or union terminal (US), joint station (UK): A railway station (q.v.) at which tracks and facilities are shared by two or more railway companies.

A train station is always a great accessory. It makes the scene look more active.

Wiring a Station Stop
With an LGB Jumbo transformer and its built-in momenum features, you need one LGB 17100 Train Sensor at each station where you want the train to stop.

Dwell Time The total elapsed time from the time that a train stops in a station (usually for the purpose of discharging and loading passengers) until the time it resumes moving.

Register Station
A station at which a train register is located.
Regular Train
A train authorized by a timetable schedule.
Repeater Signal
Signal placed on the opposite side of the track from the controlling signal.

IND INDependent City Subway - subdivision B-2 of the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) subway Initial Station The first station on each subdivision from which a train is authorized to occupy the main track.

Terminating Station The last station on each subdivision to which a train is authorized to occupy the main track.

Block station. A place at which block signals are located and from where they may be operated.

Until the mid-1970s, there was usually a provision for picking up mail bags from smaller stations while the train was in motion, sorting the mail enroute by Railway Postal Clerks, and dropping bags of mail off at stations along the train's route.

(The passenger station is behind the spectator looking across the shelf.) A LCL car on every local freight will have business for the freight station. Sears Roebuck shipped sewing machines, wind mills and chick brooders by freight.

The Atlas passenger station kit is a classic kit which is well manufactured and can be built into a nice looking kit with a little time. Probably not too good for a young child since it has lots of parts.

Do you want mountains, road cuts, towns, tunnels, station stops, switch yards or more. On a small railroad it will be hard to have it all.
Spend the time and draw a track plan before you start buying and building.

I noticed that when my engine with electro coupler open, approached a stationary car with closed coupling in a direction that is a left curve for the engine (84" or 100" curve), they would not lock closed.

A report of freight received and dispatched from a station. This information is taken from waybills for shipments and/or forwarded to other properties or stations.
Abutment
A mass of masonry supporting an arch or beam at the ends of a bridge.

Cattle dock
A raised trackside platform, fenced-in, used to herd cows aboard cattle vans. Once very common at rural stations.
