Tender pickup is usually a weak link. Axle bearings make dubious connections to truck frames. The bolster to frame contact is another possible problem. Connections at both ends of the drawbar are also places for OHM BUGS to lurk.

After removing the shell you should see the motor and sequencer (Flyer's sequencers are in the tender, if steam). Find the lead that comes from the roller or insulated wheels.
