With a two-way junction, the two diverging routes are "Left" and "Right". With a three-way junction, the three diverging routes are "Left", "Forward" and "Right". "Forward" is the central diverging route of a three-way junction.
(Remember, I'm thinking of rails coming through the wall from a layout in the garage.) The three-way turnout saves a few inches of shelf. Until 1948 the Carson and Colorado -SPNG- had a three way stub where the rails entered the yard at Keeler.
