Seniority rights: Every position on the railroad has a seniority roster of its own, and works on a "bid and bump system.

EZ track can be easily powered for hours of enjoyment.
Both children and adults can enjoy playing with a model train. There are many options for train sizes, and different types of track. EZ track is one of the easiest types to put together and run.

Cutting track the right way

Cutting track the right way is important for a good fit and no derailments. Using a hacksaw will create metal dust which is hard to clean up.

Trackplan: the track design used to establish a train's potential routes through a model railroad layout. Three primary trackplan/layout types are defined here: Loops allow a continuous run without many wiring or switching complications.

Lay the track on the table carefully. Create twists, curves, tunnels, figure 8's etc. as wished and depending on how much track that you have.

Main Track A track extending through yards and between stations which must not be occupied without authority or protection.

Track with a gauge less than 4'-8½" (standard gauge). In the U.S., 3-foot and 2½-foot gauges were used. In modeling, narrow gauge is labeled first with the scales, followed by an n (for narrow), followed by the track gauge in feet (e.g. Hon3).

Track laborer. Name may have originated from the gander-like tremulations of a man tamping ties, or from the old Gandy Manufacturing Company of Chicago, which made tamping bars, claw bars, picks, and shovels.

Lichen
A moss-like plant which, when dried, preserved with glycerine, and dyed, is commonly used as a scenic decoration to simulate foliage, brush and undergrowth on model railroad layouts.

Track adjacent to a main or secondary track for meeting or passing trains
Spine Car
Lightweight articulated car that is assembled in permanent consists of three or five configuration.

Track Clips
Devices used to attach two ties of adjoining track sections together in a toy train layout. These are used to fasten track sections together in temporary layouts.

Freight cars designed to carry specific commodities, some of which contain devices to protect and/or aid in handling shipments.

Twin track
A model railway controller with two sets of controls for controlling two separate locomotives. Usually called twin cab in North America. Also refers to a double-track railway line in real life.

We clean track. We polish wheels. Still our trains slow or stall on some of our turnouts. Flywheels help. All wheel pickup helps. However, we are living with problems instead of fixing them. Grit your teeth. Prove your courage.

Wayside: Trackside. The term presumably has its origin from the term right-of-way.
Well tank: A type of tank locomotive. The water tank is mounted between the frame plates, beneath the cab and boiler.

Maglev test tracks have been built in China, Germany, Japan and South Korea.

Electric Switch Lock An electrical device that locks a track switch in a position and prevents the movement of the switch until the lock is electrically unlocked.

Absolute Block A length of track in which no train or engine is permitted to enter while it is occupied by another train or engine.

Pocket Portion of track within a terminal on which a train may stand for a period of time Pomptrolli South-African: a hand-operated pump-action inspection cart.

RT Active Suspension A recent development in train ride control, active suspension uses microprocessor control to detect changes in track formation or direction and then signal changes in the suspension configuration.

Cab Control : A means of wiring a layout to enable track sections to be switched between two or more speed controllers.
Capacitor Discharge Unit (CDU) : An electrical devise for solenoid point motors.

Scissor Crossing - Junction between two parallel railway tracks enabling trains to cross over from one to the other in either direction.
Scratchbuilding - Making a model from raw materials and parts, and not using kits.

A graphic depiction for visually comparing load configurations with fixed obstruction configurations, or with car or load configurations on an adjacent track.

Scenery Every part of a model railway apart from the baseboards, track, wiring, and trains. Scenic Break A means of dividing up a model railway to give an impression that two areas are much further apart than they really are.

I use track lighting with halogen bulbs which is close to natural noontime sun light.
Wait at least a week before painting clouds. Then I use spray cans of flat white with templates held 2 - 4 inches away from the blue wall.
