Train Brake

Model railroad TrainTrain Line

Train Brake The combined brakes on locomotive and cars that provides the means of controlling the speed and stopping of the entire train.

Air Brake This is the most common type of train brake using compressed air. For details, see the Brakes Page. Air Dryer A device provided to remove moisture from compressed air produced by a compressor.

When pressure on the pedal was released, the train brakes were automatically applied. This was to detect sleeping or dead engineers. Deckorate In the days before air brakes, the duties of the brakemen included stopping the train.

In making stops from fifteen or more miles per hour, the train brakes should be applied with an initial reduction of six to ten pounds, depending on make up and speed of the train, Initial reduction must be made before the throttle is reduced, ...

Vacuum brake Continuous train brake which is fail-safe in operation: the brake is powered by a vacuum from the locomotive but the application is actually by atmospheric pressure when the vacuum is released. Now largely superseded by the air brake.

The process of applying, releasing, and reapplying train brakes to control speed without completely recharging the train brake system.
Cycle Time
The length of time consumed by a freight car from one loading to the next.

Slang term for a passenger train brakeman.
Bad Order Car or Bad Order Track
A railway car which is being taken out of service for repair. Also, the yard track assigned to storage of such cars.

A valve for applying the train brakes in emergency. It is connected to the brake pipe by a branch pipe and operated by releasing brake pipe air to the atmosphere.
Emergency Rate (Freight) ...

Air for the train brakes is run in high-pressure hoses with quick-release pressure couplings between the locomotive and tender, and between the cars.

Valve that allows the engineer to control the air brakes on a locomotive or multiple-unit grouping of locomotives independently of the train brakes.
Industrial locomotive ...
