Transformer Selection Guide
The following link will take you to a PDF format guide to selecting voltage and current ratings for transformers and rectifiers for various types of power supplies.

0.01 sec.

As a transformer becomes warm when in use its output normally diminishes. Because of this fact not more than three-quarters of its rated wattage should he drawn from a transformer continuously.
POWER REQUIREMENTS ...

Transformer: strictly speaking, an electrical device for raising or lowering AC voltage, but in toy train parlance, and AC power pack for controlling train speed and direction.

Transformer
Changes high-voltage 110-volt AC house current into low-voltage AC current to power your DCC system.
Transition curve ...

Transformer
A device for changing high voltage AC into low voltage AC. In model railroading now called a power supply.
Transit ...

Transformer
A device for changing ( transforming) high-voltage Alternating Current (AC) into low-voltage AC.
Transition Curve ...

Transformer. Apparatus which serves to increase or decrease voltage.
Transpose rail. Changing rail from one side to the other on curves because of headwear from tangent to full curvature or just reversed.
Transition spiral. An easement curve.

- Your main transformer(s), or controls to your transformer(s), for turning the power to your layout on or off.

The 5-volt supply has two outputs called "+5" and "signal ground". The "signal ground" is the common return for the electronics on detectors and signal control circuits.

You can use a wall transformer, but I prefer a power pack with a rheostat to control the brightness and the voltage. Whatever you use, be sure it's protected by a circuit breaker.

Single Supply A method of powering a layout where all controllers are powered by the same transformer (which therefore needs to be powerful enough to power as many trails as you intend running at the same time). CANNOT BE USED WITH COMMON RETURN.

With an LGB Jumbo transformer and its built-in momenum features, you need one LGB 17100 Train Sensor at each station where you want the train to stop. Connect the two outer terminals of the 17100 together with a short (1.5 inch) piece of wire.

Electric apparatus, such as overhead wires, third rail, transformers, switches, motors, etc., is deenergized when disconnected from the normal power source, but such apparatus is dangerous to life until it is known to be properly grounded.

Use a variable voltage transformer to change the voltage supplied to the main winding if you desire a high slip, reduced voltage speed control, which is more efficient.

a transformer to drop the voltage, and a rheostat, which is a variable resistor to change voltage and control the speed of a train. A circuit breaker protects the unit by opening the circuit when too much current is drawn from the pack.

Electrical control comes from ten MRC Controlmaster 20 transformers, with A and B cabs for Oak Island Yard, the Lehigh Line, and the Chemical Coast Secondary/Port Reading Yard.

AC & DC electricity knowledge
A good strong transformer with: 1) track dc 2) accessory dc and 3) ac voltage connections. Or a DCC system.
A Dremel motor tool with cut off accessories for track cutting and other grinding.

electrical machine (traction motor) geared to the axles of all diesel-electric and electric locomotives, and used to convert the electrical energy provided by the diesel engine and main alternator in a diesel electric locomotive, or the transformer ...

More recently electric train heating (ETH) has been fitted to locomotives and coaches, this uses power from the diesel set (usually from a separate generator) or a separate feed from the main transformer on electric locomotives.

Location case (UK): A trackside cabinet used to house signalling equipment such as relays or transformers.
