With a spool on the square shaft of the gear motor and a jar lid for a pulley on the turntable shaft, it was the Ancient One's style of model railroading. The belt connection between the two had to follow the pattern.

Spiral Tunnel
RAILWAYS. A tunnel which makes a turn of 270 degrees or more, and where in most cases the track passes over itself (although not usually entirely within the tunnel).

The roundhouse and turntable at Wolsztyn. There were many steam engines stored here, only a few were operating. The railroad has a shortage of qualified steam locomotive engineers, which prevents more trains from operating.

A tool or shop machine for bending rails to fit curves in tracks, turnouts, or turntable circles; to introduce bend in stock rails; and for a variety of allied operations.

On short runs, operating the locomotive "backwards" is more economical than using a wye or turntable or operating a second locomotive. Some locomotives may have a second control stand to facilitate operation in the "reverse" direction.

Roundhouse - An Engine shed for the storage, service and repair of locomotives usually with a turntable.

When the layout was shortened, the roundhouse and turntable were placed at the end. The length of the freight yard had to be reduced.

  At Holborn yard along the north side of the layout is a coaling tower, sixteen stall roundhouse and turntable.

Others choose to emmulate full-scale railroads, modeling short sections of it on their individual layouts. Hobbyists model mainlines, sidings, branchlines, turntables, and other features of prototype railroads.
