Tyre The metal rim of a wheel. The North American spelling of automobile tires is with an I and not a Y, but I'm not sure what the actual equivalent name of the railway tyre is.
A flat spot on the circular tyre of a wheel, usually caused by the wheel skidding along the rail when braking heavily. Causes a characteristic knocking noise and vibration in the vehicle. Flitch Plates The outer metal plates of a sandwich frame.
Unlike the traditional spoked wheel, the tyre is integral with the wheel and cannot be separately changed. Motor Bogie A powered bogie. The term is usually confined to multiple unit trains so as to distinguish them from trailer (unpowered) bogies.
Two-Rail - Current is fed along both rails of the track, the rails and wheels being insulated from one another. Tyre - (American, Tire) Steel band forming the periphery of a wheel on which the flange and tread profile is formed.
