Mint, they were the $10 gold
pieces.  The Mint did not put a denomination on these coins, and the
general public did not know what to call the coins.  Because there was an
"eagle" on the reverse of these coins, it became know as the "Eagle."  ...

Still, despite the magnificent job Saint-Gaudens had done with designing the new $20 and $10 gold pieces, it was left to Mint Chief Engraver, Charles Barber, ...

He also proposed a $10 gold piece, similar to the half Joe or double guinea. Jefferson also suggested, if needed, coins of 50, 25, 20, 5 and a 1/2 cents might be helpful.

      Christian Gobrecht designed the $10 Gold Eagle, also known as Coronet or Liberty Type, minted from 1838 to 1907.

1907 Indian Head Eagle 10 Gold Dollar
The Indian Head Eagle 10 Gold Dollar was produced from 1907 to 1933. It was designed by American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens.

1834 - The gold content of the Eagle ($10 gold) is reduced from 247.5 grains to 23.2 grains, due to the melting of U.S. gold coins in Europe, raising the price of gold to $20.67. The "dollar" (there were no gold dollar coins until 1849) =23.

This "Double Eagle" gold coin was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who also designed Indian Head $10 Gold which also circulated from 1907 - 1933. This magnificent coin is considered by many to be the most beautiful American coin ever minted.

There were 1500 specimen uncirculated silver coins issued that featured a milled edge, 750 proof pieces with a plain edge and 10 gold with the plain edge. The silver proof was originally available at $13.

Called a double eagle because the gold content was twice that of an "eagle" $10 gold piece. Double Eagle gold pieces contain "almost" an ounce of golddouble edge lettering - describes and error found on some US Presidential dollar coins.

Lawmakers hope the coins - and an accompanying $10 gold piece for collectors featuring former first ladies - will be a big money raiser for the government like the 50-state quarter program.

The great sculptor mixed two traditions for the $10 gold coins by using the "Miss Liberty" profile adding a feathered Indian headdress. The unusual edge of the coin was decorated with 46 raised stars to represent the 46 states.

Refers to $20 gold pieces - usually pre-1907 Liberties. $10 gold coins are often referred to as EAGLES - making the $20 pieces "double".
