One of the most common half eagles struck at the Dahlonega Mint in terms of number of coins known, but in high grade (Choice About Uncirculated or better) it becomes a rare coin.
Unscrupulous dealers (oxymoron) like to purchase at About Uncirculated prices and bump up the grade when selling. By bumping up the grade to full Uncirculated, a heady profit can be reaped.
Many of the scarcer dates from the 1840's and 1850's are pricey in About Uncirculated but are very affordable in Extremely Fine. One of my favorite issues is the 1852-O.
No dates in the series are very rare, and most specimens are found in grades from Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated.

AU - Normally referred to as AUNC in UK grading and AU using the American system. Both mean 'About Uncirculated' but the UK grade is higher up the scale than the US version. The US version equates to a Good Extremely fine.

Some coins in About Uncirculated or higher grades with ugly toning could probably benefit from a light dipping. As a general rule, though, uncleaned Draped Bust coins are valued higher than cleaned ones.
Premium Quality: Within the parameters of this book, the term "Premium Quality" refers to coins which grade About Uncirculated-50 or higher for rare dates and Mint State-62 or higher for common dates.
