Aegis
A small cloak or breastplate, generally draped over armour, most often associated with the Greek goddess Athena, and later with her Roman counterpart, Minerva. It usually displays a gorgon's head or 'gorgoneion'

aegis - a short cloak, usually consisting of a goatskin with a border of snakes, worn by Athena and Zeus and by Hellenistic and Roman rulers who identified with them.

Note: The "aegis" or whatever is on the left shoulder appears more often on coins of Aurelian. Further research is needed to determine what this part of the armor is to represent.

But the necklace is actually the top of her aegis, or breastplate, which extends from her shoulder to her neck and which is not always on the flan, as with the above specimen.

Under the aegis of Andrew W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury, a total of 18,324 coins, tokens and medals from the Mint at Philadelphia were moved to Washington.

The Septimius Severus is ordinary except for the bust wearing an aegis; the Trajan Decius is very rare as a denarius. Portraits are all quite recognizable as their subjects but the styles are still just a bit off.

Bust of Athena right, in high-crested Corinthian helmet & an aegis / APAMEWN, eagle alighting right on basis decoraged with meander pattern, flanked by caps of the Dioskouroi surmounted by stars, magistrates ANTIFWN & MENEKLEOS. BMC 46.
