AELIA and ALLIA. Plebeian gens. - The surnames of this family, as they appear on its coins, are Bala, Lama, Paetus, Sejanus. Twentyfour varieties.

 


Aelia Pulcheria was born in 399, the daughter of the Emperor Arcadius (383-408) and Aelia Eudoxia, daughter of Bauto the Frank.

Our examples show two coins of Aelia Flaccilla, wife of Theodosius I, and one of Aelia Eudoxia, wife of Arcadius. Interestingly, the latter was a particularly powerful woman serving her feeble minded husband as one of the chief 'advisors'.

His second move as emperor was to send for the Praetorians and Casperius Aelianus who had been involved in the plot against Nerva. They expected a promotion, but when they arrived, Trajan ordered their deaths.

Adopté par Hadrien, il entre dans la gens Aelia. Au droit le titre de Pius rappelle qu'Antonin a défendu la mémoire de son père adoptif, Hadrien, malgré l'opposition du Sénat et s'est vu décerner cette distinction honorifique qui devient son surnom.
