The ANA was founded in 1891. It was later chartered by Congress to advance knowledge and improve communication among numismatists. The ANA is the largest organization of its kind with about 25,000 members.
The ANA convention was not held that summer because of an influenza epidemic that broke out, taking 100,000 lives along the East Coast and tens of millions worldwide. Duffield's suggestion appeared in the November, 1918, issue of The Numismatist.
The ANA also has a code of ethics, so you have some recourse if you get sold some fake, counterfeit, or over-graded coins. However the ANA is nowhere as vigilant as the PNG in mediating disputes when people cannot get a resolution directly.
The ANA national headquarters and museum is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It claims a membership of over 30,000. In 1912 the association received a Federal Charter by the United States Congress for its work in the field of numismatics.
The ANA is involved in public education, clinical nursing standards, and lobbying state and federal lawmakers to advance the profession. They address ethics, public policy, and the economic and general welfare of nurses.

The ANA has endorsed a grading scale that divides circulated and uncirculated coins into 24 distinct coin grades. There are 13 circulated grades and 11 uncirculated grades.
The ANA recognizes several steps in the Uncirculated category, going from MS-60, 63, 65, 67, and 70.

When grading coins, the official ANA grading scale ranges from 1 to 70, with 1 being the worst and 70 being the best. A coin grading of 1 is barely identifiable as a coin, while a coin grading 70 is perfect and very difficult to obtain.

Make a trip to the Smithsonian when it reopens and look at their early Proofs. Or go to the ANA Museum and look at Harry Bass' early gold Proofs. These are true Proofs and you can get a good idea of what the base line is for comparative purposes.
