Arrows Coinage & the Mint Act of 1853
The unprecedented amount of gold unearthed during the California Gold Rush sparked a boom in mining throughout the world.

Arrows half dimes are easily collected in all but the highest grades. There are no real "stoppers" in the three-year set, but the New Orleans coins are considerably more elusive and expensive than those from the Philadelphia Mint.

Arrows quarters of 1873-74 are easily obtainable in circulated grades but become very elusive in AU or better. The key to the series is the 1873-CC issue, which is extremely rare in mint state. Next in scarcity is 1873-S.

with arrows and rays: silver Quarter Dollars and Half Dollars of 1853 that have arrowheads on either side of the date and radiating rays on the reverse to indicate changes in their weight.

Arrows appeared again in 1873-74, this time to signify a slight boost in weight meant to give the coins exact metric figures. Another major change occurred in 1866, when the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added on a ribbon above the eagle.

right are arrows.  There is an old legend which states that if the country

In a common analogy illustrating the difference between accuracy and precision, repeated measurements are compared to arrows that are fired at a target. Accuracy describes the closeness of arrows to the bullseye at the target center.

So far as I know, there are only three 1853-O half dollars known of the Without Arrows type (not to be confused with 1853-O half dollars with arrows at date and rays on the reverse, minted later in the year, which are quite common).

The reverse portrayed the raised wing American eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in his talons, above was a field of fifteen stars and the legend ".UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Other varieties, for example, "arrows at date" is easy to recognize. The "with motto" coins have the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST over the eagle. All these different mintmarks and varieties make the Seated Liberty half dollar a popular coin to collect.

The obverse of the Two Cents denomination features a shield with a pair of arrows crossed behind, dangles of leaves and berries on both sides, a scroll with "IN GOD WE TRUST" above, and the date below.

The reverse depicts an eagle with a shield on its breast, an olive branch clutched in its right talons and a bundle of arrows in its left talons.

The most obvious difference is in the angle of the top feathering (or fletching) of the arrows in the eagle's claw, and in the boldness of the eagle's chest which was rather flat on the first two versions.

The reverse, or back of the coin, depicts an image of an eagle with arrows and an olive branch at its feet. The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 allowed the use of silver for coins. In 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was thus minted.
