Arrows - Or Arrows at date. In the 1800's, arrows were placed on both sides of the date to indicate a change in the weight of a coin. Arrows and Rays describe a type where the coin had Arrows at the date and rays around the Eagle on the reverse.
The two accepted types, the Arrows at Date, Rays Around Eagle (most often labeled as Arrows and Rays), and the later Arrows at Date, No Rays, were necessitated by increasing prices of silver in the early 1850s.
So far as I know, there are only three 1853-O half dollars known of the Without Arrows type (not to be confused with 1853-O half dollars with arrows at date and rays on the reverse, minted later in the year, which are quite common).

Other varieties, for example, "arrows at date" is easy to recognize. The "with motto" coins have the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST over the eagle. All these different mintmarks and varieties make the Seated Liberty half dollar a popular coin to collect.

The 1854 O coin included the listing cut out of an auction catalogue. The coin was listed as Lot 1306 : "1854 O Arrows at date. A very sharply struck, pleasing example with lovely gold and blue-green toning.....
