Adding color(s) to a coin by various treatments with chemicals, heat and other methods in an attempt to increase its value.

 


Artificial Toning - The process of artificially, ehancing a coins color or look through chemical or extreme heat/cold means. Typically a bluish or dark brown color. Many times toned coins are spotty.

Artificial Toning - Coloration added to a coin by treatment with chemicals or other "doctoring".
As - Bronze coin.
Assay - A test to ascertain the fineness and weight of a precious metal.

Artificial toning
Tarnish appearing on a coin caused by purposeful improper storage to create the surface colors now appearing on that coin.

Artificial Toning
This is another attempt at fraud where someone tries to enhance a coins color or look with extreme heat/cold or chemicals. It is usually a dark brown or bluish color and often looks spotty.

Man-made colour with the aid of chemicals and accomplished over a relatively short time (minutes to weeks). Usually done in deliberate attempt to conceal poor quality lustre, wear, hairlines

This deliberate artificial toning will not adhere to the abraded surface of a cleaned coin in the same way that it would to the original coin metal. The artificial toning will lack depth and the colors may appear to be "painted" or applied by crayons.

Although I haven't seen a definition for "artificial toning" in print, it seems to refer to a type of toning produced by heat, chemicals, or other substances and applied to a coin over a short period of time. Natural toning tends to be irregular.

Questionable Toning/Color - This was formerly referred to as ARTIFICIAL toning or color, but since there is so much controversy and subjectivity about this, the designation was changed.

The ability to detect cleaning, artificial toning, repaired and engraved coins also enters into the picture. I will not attempt to enter into this argument for this article.

toning, which seldom looks natural, and the chemicals used may have long term detrimental effects. Such coins should be discounted. Unfortunately, only experience can teach one the difference between natural and artificial toning.
