In the Coin Dealer Newsletter, ask prices are set as a small percentage over the bid price. (or the bid is set as a small percentage under the ask price).

 


When applied to circulated coins, and other fairly standard items, the bid/ask prices are usually accurate, meaningful and useful. When applied to mint state coins, especially Mint State and Proof 65, they can be somewhat misleading.

To today's average buyer an otherwise romantic and historical 1882-CC silver dollar in Uncirculated grade most likely represents an item with a bid and ask price, a brilliant, lustrous round disc which, it is hoped, will prove to be a good investment.

Spread
Represents the difference between Bid and Ask prices.
Troy Ounce
A unit of weight, equal to about 1.1 avoirdupois (ordinary) ounces. The word ounce when applied to gold, always refers to troy ounces.

Term applied to the area resulting when coins rub together in rolls or bags and small amounts of metal are displaced.
