Attributes of Apollo that help identify him on coins are rather more varied than for most gods. Sometimes he is shown with a lyre as the god of music and poetry. Sometimes he borrows his sister Artemis' (Diana) bow and is shown hunting.

The attribute "MS" is an abbreviation for "mint state". The numbers that follow (in this example 69) indicate the quality of the coin. The quality numbers run from 1 to 70, with a 70 being an absolutely prefect coin. See related topic- "PR69".

Comments: Attributed to Jarvis and Company by Breen, others considered it from Machin's Mills. Miller 15 is distinguished by the punctuation, which includes a final stop as well as the four cinquefoils.

Previously attributed as Khusru 590 - 628 CE, this is an imitation produced in Tarbistan after the fall of the Sassanian Empire to the Muslims.

Displaying most attributes discerning collectors seek as they assemble the highest quality sets, it is true gem quality.

The owl is Athena's attribute or mascot. According to the mythology, Athena at times also took the very form of her owl. The owl species depicted on Athenian Owls is the Athena Noctua, also called the Little Owl or Minerva Owl.

As with any grading system, there is often disagreement or confusion over the assignment of a "technical grade" and how attributes should be weighted. Also, some object to "particularization" and the pitfalls of such a slippery slope.

This lot is from a group of several hundred late Roman bronze coins
ranging from AE 4 up to follis size (mostly antoniniani, AE 3 and smaller folles).

A coin which has already been attributed by denomination, date, mintmark and major variety (such as Morgan Dollar, 1879-S, Reverse of '78) can often still be broken down by die variety.

Julian attributes the delayin large measure to lack of public demand for this small silver coin, either from merchants and their customers or from bullion depositors.

The most famous coin type of ancient Miletus, and one of the earliest of all coins that can be attributed to a particular city, is the electrum stater that features a crouching lion regardant on the obverse, and three incuse punches on the reverse.

Eye appeal is the most subjective attribute of a coin, but there are norms and standards shared by numismatists.

Coins similar to this one have been attributed in the past and published by Iliesku. They have generally been found within the area of the Danube and Dniester estuaries.

Most coins can be attributed without difficulty, either on sight or with the help of one of the standard reference guides. When a coin is described as being "attributed to" a given country, ruler, etc.

Also, for very high end coins, the auction house will attribute the coin with respect to variety. They will also grade the coin and perhaps even get it slabbed prior to sale. They may even take a picture of your coin and print it in a catalogue.

For varieties I can attribute them for $4.00 plus return postage. If you have a new variety it will get listed with you as discoverer. For basic collections I sometimes critique them for quality for new customers.

This specimen was attributed to the Genoese Andrea de Rivegno or to the Bolognese banker Guiliano Arardi. Both of them belonged to the financers of the English king Richard Lionheart who borrowed money from them for the Third Crusade.

Roman coins (at least those starting with the later Republican era about 200 BC) are identified primarily by six attributes.
The primary consideration is the person who issued the coin.

Another countermark often attributed to Vespasianus during the civil war is the Capricorn, mostly found on eastern provincial coins. A similiar countermark exists on regular roman coinage from Claudius, likely applied in the balkan region.

As we have seen, there are dozens of varieties of follari attributed to various dukes or consuls of the city of Gaeta and to the Norman and Swabian kings. Ferraro describes about seventy varieties of them.

The first type has been tentatively attributed as coins struck for use in Nepal whereas type 2 is attributed as coins struck for export to Tibet. No coins of these two types are known to have come from Tibet.

Among the many accolades attributed to the Pobjoy Mint, there are two that
stand as tribute to their spirit of innovation in coinage.  In 1996, they
produced the world's first hologram coin, and in 1999 they struck the world's
first Titanium coin.

I have just described how marks, die breaks, evidence of die clashes, laminations, adjustment marks, and other attributes of dies and planchets can affect the appearance of a coin and are characteristic of a piece at the moment of striking.
