AU-58 (Choice About Uncirculated) - Virtually uncirculated, except for minor wear marks on high points. Nearly all mint luster must be present, and must have outstanding eye appeal.

AU-58: Luster should be intact except for highest points. Careful checking will find high point wear. Has the 'look' of a MS-63 (marks/luster) and at times is offered as a MS-63.
Grading Uncirculated Liberty Nickels ...

73 1867 AU-58. A pleasing example with frosty light yellow gold lustre and faint orange toning. Slightly weak on the highest hair details and lower wreath details. Lightly abraded with minor hairlines.
Light obverse and reverse clash marks.

AU coins come in AU-50, AU-55 and AU-58. As a novice, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between AU and Unc coins. I know I have trouble a lot of the time.

Other "CC" Mint highlights include 1871-CC (AU-55) and 1872-CC (AU-58). The 1879-O double eagle is a major rarity in all grades, and the Eagle Collection example is a desirable MS-60 grade.

From the standpoint of cosmetic appeal, an accurately graded AU-58 Charlotte gold coin is likely to be more attractive than a coin graded Mint State-60 or Mint State-61.

This 1850 $20 Liberty PCGS AU-58 is a near-mint condition example of the first regular issue $20 ever produced! Only 1.17 million were struck and today under 2000 have been certified in all grades.

Circulated Grades (AG-3 to AU-58)
Very Choice About Uncirculated - 58. Abbreviation: AU-58 The barest trace of wear may be seen on one or more of the high points of the coin's design.

Very Choice / About Uncirculated (AU-58)
There are only the slightest traces of wear visible on the highest points of the coin, frequently, they are little more than luster breaks.

Also, try to stick with AU-58 and MS-62 graded by NGC or PCGS (learn more about Grading Coins), avoid not graded gold coins.

Lo and behold the coin came back rated as almost uncirculated AU-58.
By now the coin was attracting so much attention and was serving as so great a conversation piece that I decided not to sell but to keep it to show off. I still have the coin.
