Sealed Bid Sale
An auction-style selling of coins in which the bidder presents a closed envelop which contains his or her bids. The bids are not reviewed until after the sale has closed at a predetermined time. This highest bid wins.

The 1804 dollar was referred to as the "King of Coins" in an 1885 auction catalogue. Since then, the word "King" has come to mean the most important coin of a particular series.

Be careful about purchasing coins from online auctions. Unscrupulous sellers often over-state the grade or conditions of coins. Also, there are widespread reports of sellers not delivering coins at all.

Now, whenever you have the opportunity to view these certified coins, whether at coin shows, auctions, or from your local dealers inventory, ignore the label completely and grade the coin.

Almost 170 years later, in 1964, a small box of "strange" coins was consigned to a Christies auction in London by the family of British nobleman Major Sir Roland Denys Guy Winn, M.C., Fourth Baron St. Oswald.

A newcomer who sees the slab as a shortcut to learning grading will soon find himself buried in all the undesirables lurking on the internet auctions. For those who know how to grade properly and consistently, these are great times.

The best place to look at a lot of coins with a minimum of hassle is at a major rare coin auction. You can easily look at hundreds of mint state and proof coins in a single sitting.

The most significant domestic measure of Tyler's single term was the Preemption Act of 1841 giving squatters on government lands the right to buy 160 acres at the minimum auction price, without competitive bidding.

The Birth of the Standing Liberty Quarter: America was at war: World War I was raging in Europe, and at home industrial technology continued to advance at breakneck pace.

The grade at which most reputable dealers and auction houses would offer an uncertified coin. Also the standard employed by the N.C.I. (Numismatic Certification Institute) grading service.

Almost never found at auctions. Breen cites only one example at auction, in the 1974 GENA, lot 1566. When this was written, only one other Breen 4842 has been authenticated at EF-40.

As I have read through specialty catalogs and participated in auctions both in person and on-line the main thing I have noticed is that people will collect just about anything. The second thing is grading.
