augur - a Roman priest who practiced divination that would reveal whether or not an action was favored by the gods.

 


By the augural insignia on silver coins of Augustus, in which the name of Lentulus appears, it is also evident, not only that he escaped death after the civil conflict at Philippi, but that he was alive B.C.

Traduction : "Augurus// Tribunicia Potestas", (Augure, revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne).
Description : Instruments pontificaux : simpulum, aspersoir, capis (vase à sacrifice) et lituus.

Augurinus, 135 BC, AR Denarius (3.82g). Roma head rt., X below chin, ROMA behind/Ionic column topped by standing figure, togate figure on either side, one with lituus (priest), C.AVG above, Craw. 242/1. Near centered on slightly small flan, rt.

The lituus was the wooden staff which the augurs held in the right hand; it symbolised their authority and their pastoral vocation. It was raised toward heavens while the priests invoked the Gods and made their predictions.

The legends are ANT AVG IIIVIR RPC (Antony Augur, one of the three for establishing the Republic) and LEG VIII (the legion for which the coin was issued). Other Legionary issues name the other legions I to XXIII and a few special units by name.

(lit. 'crooked') The Romans used the word in two senses. A. A short curving staff, hooked at the end, used by augurs to mark out a sacred space for the observation of birds. B. An alternate term for a 'carnyx', a long trumpet with a curved end.

The name of Augurinus occurs also at Hierapytna and Polyrhenium. For επι with the dative see Cydonia. Trajan. Æ rev. ΓΟΡΤΥC Warrior (Gortys ?), with spear and circular shield.

Flamens took care of the cults of various gods, while augurs were trusted with taking the auspices. The sacred king took on the religious responsibilities of the deposed kings.
