By the year 270AD, the Roman Empire simply was not what it once was. Large portions of the North and East were controlled by usurpers; barbarian raids were a real threat on every border.

Aurelian [b. ca. 207], a soldier of outstanding ability and energy known to his men as "manu ad ferrem" (old hand-on-hilt), won a great reputation as a cavalry commander.

The improvement was maintained and given further impetus by the vigorous action of Aurelian (A.D. 270-275).

The decline in the silver content to the point where coins contained virtually no silver at all was countered by the monetary reform of Aurelian in 274.

With the monetary reforms of Aurelian and Diocletian came changes in the mint markings [or at least the notation in the exergue - the area at the bottom reverse of the coin]. Roman numerals appeared, the meaning of which is still debated.

Aurelian issues new, nearly pure coins, using gold from his eastern conquests, but raises their nominal value by 2½ times hoping in this way to stay ahead of inflation.

Marcus Aurelius Probus was born in 232 in Sirmium in Illyria in the east. By the time he was 40, he was a leading Roman general under Aurelian, and had re-conquered Egypt for the Roman Empire.
