bag toning Coloring acquired from the bag in which a coin was stored. The cloth bags in which coins were transported contained sulfur and other reactive chemicals.

Bag Marks - When coins are struck they usually fall straight into bags and are transported to banks and shops for distribution.

Bag toning - Coloring acquired from the bag while a coin was stored. When stored in bags for extended periods, coins in close proximity to the cloth often acquire beautiful red, yellow, blue and other colors.

bag mark - Gashes and marks on a coin that occur during late in the production process. Happens when coins bump into each other when sliding down the metal chute into a bag with thousands of similar coins.

Bag Marks -Scratches or minor abrasions caused by coins knocking against each other in bags. As the Mint transports its coins in bags, it is natural for uncirculated specimens to exhibit such abrasions.

Bag Mark
When coins are first minted they are placed in cloth bags for delivery to banks etc. As the bags are moved around the coins inside rub against each other causing surface marks and scratches.

Bag Mark(s)
This term refers to the hits and ticks on coins which were caused by contact with other coins. During the early years of MINTING, coins were ejected from the presses and into bins or bags along with numerous other coins.

Bag Marks - Minor abrasions on an otherwise uncirculated coin, caused by contact between coins in a mint bag.

bag mark

I have a bag (or large bottle) of the special Bicentennial coins we used back in 1976; what are they worth?
They are worth their face value with a very few exceptions I will mention toward the end of this note.

Often this term is used to indicate marks on a coin that are not as obvious as bag marks. However, sometimes it is used to mean the same thing. See "abrasions", "bag mark", or "gouges". copper nickel - A metal alloy of 88% copper and 12% nickel.

However, as luck would have it, some time around the late 1980s/early 1990s, fellow errorist Chuck Avery of Michigan purchased a half bag and a full bag of uncirculated 1955-S cents, both with a serious vein of these varieties hidden within.

'Follis' properly refers to a bag of coins dating to a century later when the tiny AE4 coins were packaged to cover the need for larger denominations not then in production.

What I suggest to people is to remove these green affected coins and place them into a "quarantine" bag or area for the time being until you can go through them and see if any are worthy of attempted salvage.

The toning of any given coin depends on a host of different factors, including how it was handled (oil and dirt from fingers and hands), how it was stored (canvas bag, paper bag, envelope, exposure to rubber band or glue, cardboard album, ...

Now, if you have a little knowledge, you can go through the bag sorting the common dates from the less common dates. You can also separate the higher grade coins from the rest before you go to the dealer.

While I strongly suggest that much of the fun of coin collecting is in the hunt, I will admit that every now and then it's nice to bag a trophy.

A "Mint Bag" of 5,000 common date bright and shiny, uncirculated BU cents are sometimes available. Costs vary. But, as of this writing,a good price is less than $100.00. Sometimes coin dealers will also have rolls of these same coins.

Apparently a bag containing £6 worth of halfpence was discovered to have 36s worth of cast counterfeit coins. This calculates to 864 counterfeit halfpence or 30% out of a total of 2,880 coins.

Bag marks are usually a problem with these large, soft gold coins. They generally picked up many bag, reeding and contact marks even before entering circulation.

When grading mint state pieces, note that this coin often comes with some parts of the design softly struck and may have many "bag" marks and abrasions.

The devil did that but got caught in the bag that the smith held against the keyhole. Then the smith closed the bag, took it to his anvil and hammered until the devil was willing to give up (ie. to not take the smith with him).

People started saving them- some even saved state quarters by the roll, others even by the bag! United States quarter maps and albums appeared in book stores. Grandparents and parents began saving the quarters for their children and grandchildren.
