Banknotes were first issued because carrying around a lot of precious metal was cumbersome and often dangerous. Banknotes were originally a claim to an amount of precious metal stored in a vault somewhere.

 


Banknotes
The Central Bank announced its intention for the new banknotes in December 1971 and Servicon, an Irish design company, was employed to design the notes of the denominations; £1, £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100.

Last weekend was the Sydney ANDA Coin and Banknote Show at the Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney (Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of August).

Banknote - A promissory note issued by a bank in useful denominations. Banknotes are payable to the bearer and intended to circulate as money. This term should not be used as a generic term for all forms of paper money.

Collection of Chinese renminbi yuan banknotes. 1/10 yuan to 10 yuan notes are of the fourth series of the renminbi. 20 to 100 yuan (red) are of the fifth series of the renminbi.

Banknotes cost between 10 cents and 25 cents each when you buy them in lots of 25 to 100. Patronizing several dealers brings a mix of material. Since kids come to the door in small packs, you can give out a random sampling.

Banknote designs, both implemented and unimplemented, and various printing plates provide insight into the development of banknote production since the establishment of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank in 1816.

An imitation banknote, used in funeral ceremonies in far eastern countries with the idea that the deceased will have money to spend in the afterlife.

The 19th century was the Pax Britannica, and the Pound Sterling, with Bank of England notes, were certainly the premier currency, and the soundest banknotes, in the world. The crisis that finally arrived to compromise this was World War I.

Hungary has suffered what was considered to be the worst inflation in recorded history. In 1941, the Pengoe was valued at 3.46 to the U.S. Dollar.

Another interesting type of money to consider: private banknotes from the 1800's. Before the US government created a national banknote, many private banks issued their own paper money without government backing.

For over a decade, renowned banknote plate engraver and medalist Christian Gobrecht had been seeking a permanent position with the Mint. By the early 1800s, however, the nepotism permeating the Mint's employment practices was firmly entrenched.

In November of 1793, the Mint hired banknote plate engraver Robert Scot as the new Chief Engraver. This decision was regretted in future years, as Scot proved to be egocentric, jealous and as a tenured Mint employee, cantankerous.

That coin or banknote is also a small canvas that will be distributed to everyone in society where upon its maker can put images and messages.

Fractional Currency
Any circulating paper of denomination below $1. Prior to 1864, this was most often banknotes or SCRIP. Often refers to Federal notes of denomination between 3c and 50c issues between 1862-1876.

Other coin experts - Numismatics who are highly skilled about coins, currencies, banknotes, and others. They may be studying coins for other reasons than collecting.

The coin was issued virtually every year from 1817 until 1917, when they were more or less replaced by banknotes. The coin was so popular that it has been extensively forged.

The American Numismatic Association often offers a class on grading paper money at its Summer Seminar. Paper Money Guaranty will grade and encapsulate paper money of the United States as well as many world banknotes.

When coin collectors use the word numismatics, though, they generally mean the study of coins in particular. A wider and more correct definition includes the study and collecting of all money-related items such as banknotes, tokens, medals, ...
