ENGLAND - Initially barbarous radiates were struck followed by the AE sceat (Northumbria and York), then AR pennies of the Heptarchy, the commonest being of Mercia and Wessex.

The retracing his steps westward, Probus delivered Gaul from an invasion of the barbarous tribes of Germany - drove back the Franks into their morasses; and carrying his arms into the German fastnesses, built a wall from the Rhine to the Danube.

Preston and five soldiers were acquitted; the other two soldiers were found guilty of manslaughter, and were barbarously branded on the hand with a hot iron. The verdict seems to have been strictly just according to the evidence presented.

These campaigns resulted in the production of barbarous copies of Roman bronze coins. Whether these were authorized local mints or contemporary counterfeits is not certain.

New coin types appeared some partly inscribed, by the Regni, Atrebates, Catuvellauni and Cantii and many of these types are again barbarous copies of the Philip stater.

Pontus was a wilder land many of whose inhabitants were still semi-barbarous. Its last king, Mithradates VI, was a remarkable adventurer who conquered the minor kingdoms of Bosporos and Colchis and then fought three great wars with Rome.

He called the gold standard 'that barbarous relic.' This deflation reached across the remnants of the British Empire everywhere the Pound Sterling was still used as the primary unit of account. In the UK the standard was again abandoned in 1931.

It is doubtless Prelatical, as on the obverse we find a head of the most barbarous execution, and before it a crosier, with short straight strokes instead of letters in the usual place of the legend.

It is often the work of novice celators, but in some cases can be barbarous imitative issues or the work of ancient counterfeiters.
