ENGLAND - Initially barbarous radiates were struck followed by the AE sceat (Northumbria and York), then AR pennies of the Heptarchy, the commonest being of Mercia and Wessex.

He called the gold standard 'that barbarous relic.' This deflation reached across the remnants of the British Empire everywhere the Pound Sterling was still used as the primary unit of account. In the UK the standard was again abandoned in 1931.
It is doubtless Prelatical, as on the obverse we find a head of the most barbarous execution, and before it a crosier, with short straight strokes instead of letters in the usual place of the legend.
It is often the work of novice celators, but in some cases can be barbarous imitative issues or the work of ancient counterfeiters.
