Bicentennial coins - The special quarter dollar, half dollar and dollar struck from mid-1975 to the end of 1976 in honor of the 200th anniversary of American Independence.

 


A few dealers pay about 10% over face for rolls of lightly circulated bicentennial coins and a bit more for uncirculated ones.

Because very large quantities of the circulation-variety commemoratives were minted, the bicentennial coins are still often found in everyday commerce and carry no premium over face value.

The Bicentennial coins exist with either the Variety 1 reverse (broad letters) or the Variety 2 (narrow letters). A small quantity of silver-clad dollars were made at the Denver Mint in error and may be found dated 1974-D, 1976-D or 1977-D.

The last silver clad dollars were the Bicentennial coins. They entered circulation in July of 1975. Among these pieces were 4 million three coin sets containing Proof Bicentennial silver clad coins from the San Francisco Mint.
