The term "sterling" in the early 19th century did not necessarily mean British coinage.
The privy mark was first used on the British coinage of King Edward III. These were secret marks showing the period in which the coin was struck.
The penny and its divisions had been important elements of the British coinage system for centuries when the adoption of a decimal system in 1971 replaced the old penny valued at 1/240 of a pound with one valued at 100 to the pound.
A glance at Coincraft's Standard Catalogue of English and UK Coins 1066 to Date, for example, shows that eleven pages are dedicated to enumerating and picturing the mintmarks that appear on British coinage between 1334 and 1662.
As it happens, such values existed in British coinage. Half and even quarter farthing coins were minted for use in Celyon (with the halves made current in Britain itself in 1842), and third farthings were minted for many years for use in Malta.
