1809 Capped Bust Half Dollar
After just two years of production, 1794 and 1795, the Mint replaced the youthful Miss Liberty with a more mature and more sedate portrait, one that has come to be known as the Draped Bust Half Dollars.

Capped Bust dime production was not continuous, with only three dates struck while Reich was in Mint employ. Dimes were issued dated 1809, 1811, 1814, 1820 through 1825, and 1827. Large quantities were struck in 1820, 1821, and 1827.

The Capped Bust Dime was designed by Mint Assistant Engraver John Reich.

1796 Capped Bust Right, No Stars
It is believed-based upon estimates published by Walter Breen-that only 963 examples were struck of the first quarter eagle.

Capped Bust to Right half eagles with Heraldic Eagle reverse were minted with dates from 1795 through 1807, although it is believed that those struck with dates prior to 1798 were produced in 1798 by using obverse dies on hand from earlier years.

Capped Bust/Reeded Edge half dollars are readily available in mint state grades, but relatively few have survived in levels of MS-65 and above.

The Capped Bust, Heraldic Eagle type of 1795-1807 was replaced in 1807 due to the addition of John Reich as Assistant Engraver at the Mint.

The six types of US quarters you can collect include the following: Draped Bust (1796-1807), Capped Bust (1815-1838), Seated Liberty (1838-1891), Barber (1892-1916), Standing Liberty (1916-1930), and Washington Head (1932-present).

The true prize of the Capped Bust series is the 1822. Depending on condition a serious collector would gladly pay $1500 to $10,000 and more to add one of these elusive old dimes to their collection.

It's hard to believe that the first original games of poker took place in 1829, around the time the Capped Bust half dime was available. Just like with money poker has changed too and the way we play the game.

These early quarters are valuable in any condition. The 1796 one year type is worth $5,000 even in very worn condition. The Draped Bust and Capped Bust types are worth $60 to $150 in average circulated grades.

Lady Liberty started out with flowing hair, and then became a draped bust, then a capped bust. The eagle also underwent several makeovers. It began as a small eagle that many thought looked too much like a pigeon.

Gobrecht's first reverse was a flying eagle, but initial resistance to such a break from tradition forced him to redeploy the familiar heraldic eagle from the Capped Bust series.
